Lammas: Oracle Spread and Earth Energy Rituals to Celebrate the First Harvest

What is Lammas?

You may have heard of Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh in the Celtic tradition. This pagan sabbat, celebrated around August 1st, marks a turning point on the Wheel of the Year: the beginning of the first harvest, a slowing down… and a subtle energetic shift.

It’s a time of deep gratitude, offering, and awareness. What you’ve been sowing — in your heart, your life, your energy — is now beginning to manifest. Lammas invites you to honor this harvest… and listen to what your soul is revealing.

Why is Lammas celebrated on August 1st?

The word Lammas comes from the Old English hlaf-mas, meaning “loaf mass.” In medieval Europe, the first loaf of bread baked from the new grain was brought to church as an offering.

But the roots of this celebration go back even further. Lughnasadh was a Celtic festival in honor of the god Lugh — a craftsman, poet, and solar warrior. According to legend, Lugh established this festival in memory of his foster mother Tailtiu, who died from exhaustion after clearing the land of Ireland for cultivation. Lammas is therefore a festival of love, remembrance, transmission… and harvest.

Energetically, Lammas also marks the beginning of the waning of the light. We slowly transition from the expansive energy of the summer solstice (Litha) into a slower, more inward phase. The days grow shorter. Your body and soul can feel the shift.

Rather than offering a complex ritual, I invite you to take a moment of guided reflection with your oracle deck.

If you have the Seasons of the Witch – Lammas Oracle, now is the perfect time to use it.

Otherwise, choose a deck that’s connected to nature, seasonal cycles, or your own inner wisdom.

Take a quiet moment to pause or meditate (you can also choose one of my guided meditations). Light a candle, pick a flower, or place a small offering near you. Take a deep breath, shuffle your deck, and pull 3 cards that call to you — don’t overthink it!

Questions to ask for Lammas

  1. What have I harvested since spring — in my life or in my being?

  2. What am I being called to release or offer now?

  3. What energetic or spiritual support is being offered for this next phase?

💡 Tip : Write your messages in a journal. You may notice synchronicities unfolding in the days to come.

You Can Celebrate Lammas Your Way

You don’t need to follow a strict tradition to honor Lammas. What matters most is your intention, presence, and your willingness to acknowledge what’s blossoming — or ending — in your life.

Take a moment to say thank you. To yourself, to the Earth, or to whatever has held you these past months. And if you feel ready, open yourself to receive the next season with softness, awareness… and a touch of magic.

Root Chakra & Spiritual Connection

Feeling grounded and connected to the Earth is essential — especially during energetic portals like Lammas.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Lammas

Is Lammas a major or minor sabbat?

On the Wheel of the Year, Lammas is considered a minor sabbat, along with Imbolc, Beltane, and Mabon. But energetically, it marks a powerful moment of gratitude, offering, and transition — a time for introspection and integration.

Where does Lammas fall on the Wheel of the Year?

Lammas falls between Litha (summer solstice) and Mabon (autumn equinox). It opens the season of harvest and marks the crossroads between outward solar energy and the inward pull of autumn. A significant moment of energetic transition.

When do we celebrate Lammas?

Lammas is traditionally celebrated on August 1st, but like all sabbats, it can be honored a few days before or after, depending on your personal rhythm. Some people choose to align it with the astrological midpoint (15° Leo), which usually falls around August 6–7.

What is the spiritual meaning of Lammas?

Spiritually, Lammas symbolizes gratitude, received abundance, and conscious offering. It’s a time to reflect on what you’ve sown — in your heart, your life, your soul’s path — and to set an aligned intention for what’s next. It’s also an invitation to slow down, integrate, and prepare the ground for the more introspective months ahead.

Who invented Lammas?

The term Lammas comes from Old English hlaf-mas, meaning “loaf mass.” It began as a Christian harvest festival. But its roots lie in the Celtic festival of Lughnasadh, dedicated to the god Lugh, master of the arts, light, and harvests. The festival honored both the fruits of one’s labor and the sacrifices of the Earth.

What’s the difference between Lammas and Lughnasadh?

They refer to the same time of year, but come from different traditions. Lughnasadh is the Celtic name, while Lammas is used more in Anglo-Saxon cultures. One emphasizes the god Lugh and ritual games, the other centers on bread and the harvest. Today, both terms are often used interchangeably.

What oracle deck should I use for Lammas?

You can use any deck connected to nature, the seasons, or your intuition. I personally recommend the Seasons of the Witch – Lammas Oracle, which was specifically created for this sabbat. Its cards hold powerful archetypes related to abundance, Earth, and life cycles.→ But truly, your favorite deck will do — as long as your intention is clear.

How can I celebrate Lammas in a simple way?

There’s no need for complex rituals. You can:

  • Pull oracle cards to reflect on your inner harvest

  • Write a letter of gratitude or make a simple offering (a flower, fruit, or piece of bread)

  • Light a golden candle and meditate on what you’re ready to release

  • Listen to an Earth-aligned energy healing

  • Cook a seasonal dish or bake bread with intention

Can I celebrate Lammas if I’m not pagan or a witch?

Absolutely. Lammas can be experienced as a moment of reconnection with yourself and with nature’s rhythms, without needing to follow any specific tradition. It’s a celebration of living Earth energy, accessible to anyone who wants to honor the cycles of life, soul, and season.
