Each year around June 21st, the Earth celebrates Litha, the Summer Solstice, the moment when light reaches its peak. In pagan traditions, this is a sacred sabbat dedicated to the power of the sun, fertility, and abundance. It also marks the beginning of a slow return to shadow — reminding you of the importance of honouring your light while staying rooted.
This is the perfect time to engage in light work —
an energetic and spiritual practice to nourish your inner clarity.

What is Light Work?
Light work is a spiritual practice that helps you connect with and amplify your inner light — your values, clarity, love, and creative power. Unlike shadow work, which invites you to explore your wounds and hidden parts for transformation, light work shines a light on what uplifts and empowers you.
As Michael A. Singer writes in The Untethered Soul:
“Your light must root itself in the material world in order to grow in a lasting way.”
Just like a tree rises only through its deep roots, you can channel the solar energy of the Solstice to strengthen your radiance.
And to support this radiant energy, your heart chakra is your greatest ally. It is through the heart that your soul’s light flows — the light of love, joy, and compassion.

This deeply anchored, vibrant light is exactly what Litha celebrates at the height of the Summer Solstice.
Litha: A Sacred Solar Celebration
Litha is the name given to the Summer Solstice in pagan traditions. It marks the longest day of the year, when the sun reaches its zenith.
In the Northern Hemisphere, this day symbolizes strength, vitality, and abundance… but also the beginning of a subtle descent, as light will gradually fade until Yule (Winter Solstice).
In Celtic and Norse traditions, Litha was celebrated with:
Bonfires
Dancing around the fire
Leaping over flames for purification
Offering flowers and herbs to the sun
It was a time when the visible and invisible worlds were united — ideal for rituals of gratitude, healing, and blessings.
The Wheel of the Year: The Sacred Cycle of Sabbats
Litha is one of the eight sabbats in the Wheel of the Year, a sacred calendar that follows the major seasonal shifts.
Sabbat | Date | Energy Theme |
Yule | Dec 21 | Rebirth of light |
Imbolc | Feb 1–2 | Cleansing and renewal |
Ostara | Mar 21 | Balance and awakening |
Beltane | May 1 | Fertility and sacred fire |
Litha | June 21 | Peak of light |
Lammas | Aug 1 | First harvest and abundance |
Mabon | Sept 21 | Gratitude and sharing |
Samhain | Oct 31 | Ancestors, death and endings |
The Wheel of the Year invites you to live more consciously — attuned to the cycles of the Earth… and your soul.
Litha Ritual: Make a Solar Crown to Activate Your Light
This Litha ritual is adapted from my book Shadow & Light in Magic (in French only). It honours the Solstice through a sacred and symbolic act: creating a solar crown and activating it through fire.
This ritual includes:
A clear intention for your summer
Energetic activation aligned with the sun
Symbolic gestures to anchor the light in your body and life
Make Your Solar Crown
The solar crown is a powerful talisman linked to fertility, vitality, the sun, and the cycle of life. The circle symbolizes both the endless turning of the seasons and your own inner light.
Materials:
Flexible branches (birch or willow) – for growth and renewal
Yellow or orange flowers (sunflowers, calendula, daisies) – for solar energy
Protective herbs (St. John’s wort, mugwort, vervain) – for cleansing and protection
Red or gold ribbons – to represent joy, abundance, and light
Natural string or twine
Steps:
Shape the branches into a circle as the base of your crown.
Secure the flowers with twine or natural string.
Tuck the herbs between the flowers with intention.
Tie the ribbons while setting your intention, such as:
“May this crown bring me light, protection, and the energy of the sun.”
Activate Your Crown with a Litha Fire Ritual
Once your crown is complete, you’ll charge it with solar energy through a sacred fire ritual.
Steps:
Light a fire (or a golden candle) to represent the sun at its peak.
Wear your crown or place it on your altar.
Dance around the fire, feeling each step as a celebration of life, joy, and creative power.
Gently pass your crown over the flames to charge it with light.
Recite this invocation:
O Sun at your zenith Illuminate my days Protect my path May light and shadow dance in harmony
After the Ritual
Hang your crown in a sacred space in your home to continue radiating its light throughout the summer.
Burn it at Samhain (October 31st) to honour the end of the light cycle and the return to shadow.
