Fall Equinox Ritual for Gratitude and Grounding

Updated: Sep 14

Fall Equinox

The Fall Equinox marks a powerful transition when light and darkness come into perfect balance. It's a sacred time to ground ourselves, reconnect with the Earth and express gratitude for the abundance in our lives. Practicing an autumn equinox ritual is a beautiful way to celebrate this season while strengthening your bond with the Earth element.

Mabon, the Autumn Equinox Celebration

In the pagan Wheel of the Year, the fall equinox is celebrated as Mabon. This modern holiday, inspired by Celtic and Norse traditions, honors the Earth and the natural cycles.

Mabon symbolizes: 🍁 Balance between light and shadow (day and night are equal in length) 🍁 Harvest and gratitude for the abundance received, both inner and outer 🍁 Transition into the darker season and preparation for winter 🍁 Harmony with the elements of Earth, Air, and Water

It is also the perfect time to release tension, set new intentions, and reflect on the cycles of life.

Why Celebrate the Fall Equinox?

Autumn, with its golden leaves and cooler days, invites us to slow down and honor the harvest—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. By taking time to practice gratitude at the equinox, you create space for greater clarity, balance, and abundance in the months ahead.

Practicing a fall equinox ritual helps you:

  • Ground yourself in the present moment

  • Honor the cycles of nature

  • Express gratitude for blessings received

  • Invite abundance for the coming season

  • Find inner balance between light and darkness

Here's a telluric autumn ritual you can practice on or just after the Fall equinox:

Materials for the Ritual

  • Tiger's eye stone (for grounding, clarity, and protection)

  • Candle (red, brown, or gold—colors connected to autumn and the Earth element)

  • Incense or smudge stick (optional, for cleansing and purifying the space)

  • Notebook and pen (to record your gratitude reflections)

  1. Create a sacred space: Choose a quiet spot, indoors or out, where you won't be disturbed. Light the candle and, if you wish, the incense or the fumigation stick to purify the space.

  2. Take a few deep breaths: Sit comfortably and take three slow, deep breaths. Inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth to relax and center yourself.

  3. Connect to the Earth: Hold your tiger's eye stone in your hands. Close your eyes and visualize roots extending from the soles of your feet, down deep into the Earth. With each inhalation, feel these roots grow stronger, and with each exhalation, imagine them sinking deeper, to the center of the Earth.

  4. Gratitude for abundance: When you're feeling grounded, take out your notebook and write down three things you're grateful for this year. This could include accomplishments, relationships, learnings or unexpected blessings.

  5. Closing: Thank the Earth for its support and extinguish the candle. You may choose to keep the stone close to you or place it on your altar to continue to benefit from its energy during this season.
