For the past few years, I’ve been talking a lot about soul types.Because understanding your soul type isn’t about putting yourself in a box — it’s about recognizing the unique way your soul experiences life.

There are 10 soul types channeled by Ainslie MacLeod, each with its own vibration, strengths, and challenges:

  • the Healer soul type

  • the Teacher soul type

  • the Thinker soul type

  • the Creator soul type

  • the Performer soul type

  • the Hunter soul type

  • the Leader soul type

  • the Spiritualist soul type

  • the Transformer soul type

If you’d like to explore each of these 10 soul types in depth, I invite you to read this in-depth article or to listen to these episodes of the Mystical & Practical podcast:

Now let's focus on one specific thing: how to identify your dominant soul type.

You Have Several Soul Types… but One Always Dominates

We all have multiple active soul types within a single incarnation. For most people, 5 to 7 soul types influence their personality, reactions, and life path.

But among them, there is always one dominant soul type.

Your dominant soul type is:

  • the main lens through which you experience life

  • the energy that naturally shapes your choices, impulses, and resistances

  • the one that expresses itself effortlessly, even when you try to act differently

  • and often, the one that was already present when you were a child

Identifying your dominant soul type often brings deep clarity. Suddenly, recurring patterns, frustrations, and behaviors make sense.

Why We Often Misidentify Our Dominant Soul Type

When searching for our dominant soul type, we often look at:

  • who we wish we were

  • what we spiritually admire or value

  • or the role we learned to play to be accepted, loved, or validated

But your dominant soul type isn’t found in an idealized version of yourself.

It reveals itself instead through:

  • what is repetitive

  • what feels natural and automatic

  • what nourishes you deeply… and what frustrates you just as much

That’s exactly what the questions below are meant to uncover.

5 Questions to Help You Identify Your Dominant Soul Type

Take a moment to answer these honestly. There are no right or wrong answers — only clues.

1. What truly nourishes me?

What activities or experiences make you feel aligned and fulfilled, even if they aren’t always recognized or valued by others? What nourishes your soul is often simple, steady, and essential to your balance.

2. What role do I naturally take in a group?

Without overthinking it:

  • Are you the one who listens and supports?

  • The one who explains and teaches?

  • The one who observes and analyzes?

  • The one who motivates, initiates, or leads?

  • The one who creates meaning or connection?

This role tends to show up again and again, regardless of the setting.

3. What do I do naturally, without effort?

What comes easily to you often feels ordinary —but it’s precisely because it’s deeply aligned with your dominant soul type. Others may even tell you:“ You make that look so easy.”

4. What frustrates me the most in life?

Your deepest frustrations are rarely random.

They reveal:

  • what truly matters to your soul

  • what goes against your natural energy

  • what drains you when you have to adapt to it for too long

Very often, your greatest frustration is the shadow side of your dominant soul type.

5. What have I always done, even as a child?

Look back at your childhood with gentleness.

  • What did you do spontaneously?

  • What role did you naturally take on?

  • What made you feel alive, useful, or in your place?

Your dominant soul type doesn’t develop in adulthood. It’s present very early on.

What About Secondary Soul Types?

Most people have several secondary soul types, usually between 5 and 7.

These secondary types:

  • add nuance to your personality

  • influence how you express your dominant soul type

  • may become more or less active depending on life phases

Your dominant soul type remains the core structure — the foundation everything else builds upon.
