Full Moon Rituals: What Should You Do During a Full Moon?

Updated: Jun 9

The full moon marks the peak of the lunar cycle, the moment when energies are at their highest. It is a natural time to release what no longer serves you, set new full moon intentions, reconnect with yourself, and honor the cycles of nature. Full moon rituals require neither complicated equipment nor prior spiritual experience. All you need is a sincere intention, a little silence, and a desire to reconnect. Here is a complete beginner's guide.

full moon ritual

I remember my first conscious full moon. I had lit a candle, taken out my journal, my Tibetan singing bowl, and an oracle deck, and sat quietly in front of the window. I didn't really know what I was doing. But something inside me knew that this moment deserved to be honored.

That evening, I wrote down what I wanted to let go of. A fear. A relationship that was draining me. A belief about myself that I had carried for far too long. I read the list aloud, then burned it in a small ceramic bowl. That simple gesture moved through me in a way I did not expect.

Since then, the full moon has become a monthly appointment that I look forward to. Not because I have to do something complicated or perfect. But because these moments of connection with the natural cycles are, for me, a way to stay aligned with who I am and where I am going.

If you are new to full moon rituals, or if you are looking to deepen your practice, this guide is for you. In it, I share everything I have learned, tested, and taught over the years.

Why Practice Rituals During the Full Moon?

The moon exerts a real and measurable influence on Earth. It governs the tides, influences plant growth cycles, and many ancient traditions recognize its direct impact on our inner world. The full moon marks the culmination of a 29-day cycle, the moment when the light is at its maximum and what was hidden rises to the surface.

What Tradition Says About Lunar Cycles

Since ancient times, all major civilizations have given a central place to lunar cycles. The Celts organized their seasonal celebrations according to the moon. Indigenous peoples of North America named each full moon according to the nature of the month: the Flower Moon in May, the Hunter's Moon in October. In Wiccan traditions, full moons are celebrated during esbats, ritual gatherings dedicated to lunar energy.

In The Powers of the Earth, I explore how these cycles are not mere superstitions but intelligent ways of synchronizing with the living world. Nature does not function in a straight line. It moves in spirals, cycles, and breaths. Our ancestors knew this. Our bodies still know it today.

What the Full Moon Awakens Within Us Energetically

Energetically, the full moon is a time of release and illumination. What was vague becomes clear.

What was buried rises to the surface. Emotions are amplified, intuition is heightened, and realizations often arrive when we are not actively seeking them. This is why many people experience restlessness, insomnia, or heightened emotional intensity on full moon nights.

Rather than being overwhelmed by this energy, full moon rituals allow you to consciously channel it. They transform this energetic peak into a moment of cleansing, gratitude, and intention-setting. It is a full moon spirituality practice that is accessible to everyone, regardless of where they are starting from.

When and How to Prepare Your Full Moon Ritual

The Ideal Window: 48 Hours Around the Full Moon

One question comes up often: should you perform your ritual exactly at the moment of the lunar peak? The answer is no. Lunar energy is available within a 48-hour window around the peak, meaning the day before, the day of, and the day after the full moon. What matters less is the exact time and more the quality of your presence when you practice.

To know exactly when the next full moon occurs, you can consult an online lunar calendar. In May 2026, for example, there were exceptionally two full moons: one on May 1 in Scorpio and another on May 31, a rare Blue Moon. And the following full moon will occur on June 29, 2026. Known as the Strawberry Moon, it takes its name from Indigenous North American traditions, which associated this time of year with the harvesting of wild strawberries. Despite its name, the moon will not appear red or pink, but it symbolizes abundance, gratitude, and the first fruits of the intentions planted in the spring.

Creating a Sacred Space, Even in an Apartment

You do not need a garden or access to nature to honor the full moon. A sacred space is created through intention, not through location. Here's how I do it:

  • I turn off artificial lights and light one or more candles.

  • I open a window or sit facing the moon if it is visible.

  • I place a few meaningful objects on a clean surface: a crystal, a flower, a leaf gathered during a walk.

  • I take three deep breaths to mark the transition between everyday life and ritual time.

  • I ring my singing bowl (but you can also ring a bell or tuning fork).

  • I turn off my phone.

This simple act of transition changes everything. It tells your nervous system: this moment is different. It deserves your full attention.

8 Full Moon Rituals for Beginners

These eight full moon rituals are the ones I personally practice and teach in my courses. All of them are accessible without prior experience. You do not need to do them all. Choose what resonates with you this month. One ritual practiced sincerely is worth more than eight performed out of obligation.

1. Moon Bathing

This is one of the oldest and simplest full moon rituals. It involves consciously exposing yourself to the moon's light in order to cleanse and recharge yourself. You can sit or lie outside, open your windows wide, or prepare a warm bath and let it soak in the moonlight if your bathroom has a window. Water and the moon share a special relationship: both govern the tides, inner and outer. During the bath, visualize the moonlight carrying away everything that weighs you down.

2. The Fire Release Ritual

This is the ritual I discovered on that memorable evening I mentioned in the introduction. Because the full moon is a time of completion and letting go, it is ideal for identifying what you want to release. Take a sheet of paper and write, without censorship, everything you wish to let go of: a fear, a habit, a toxic relationship, a limiting belief. Read your list aloud, then burn it in a safe container (a ceramic or metal bowl). Watch the flames and let go. The full moon release ritual through fire is, by far, the one that produces the most immediate and tangible effect in the body.

3. Setting Intentions and Practicing Gratitude

If the new moon is the time to plant intentions, the full moon is the time to strengthen them and celebrate what has already begun to grow. Take your journal and write in two stages: first, three things you are grateful for in the cycle that is ending. Then, three full moon intentions for the cycle that is beginning. Write them in the present tense, as though they already exist: “I am aligned with my purpose. I trust myself. I attract relationships that nourish me.”

4. Full Moon Meditation

Full moon meditation is a powerful practice for accessing your inner guidance at a time when the veil between the conscious and unconscious mind is at its thinnest. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and visualize moonlight entering through the crown of your head, slowly flowing throughout your body and illuminating every cell. Remain in this space for as long as you wish. The images, words, and sensations that arise during this meditation are often messages worth recording in your journal afterward.

5. Charging Crystals Under the Moon

The full moon is recognized in many traditions as the ideal time to cleanse and recharge crystals. Place your stones on a windowsill or outside and allow them to bathe in moonlight all night long. The next morning, they will be charged with the energy of the cycle. Crystals that are particularly receptive to lunar energy include moonstone, clear quartz, amethyst, and labradorite.

6. Creating a Lunar Altar

A lunar altar is a symbolic space that you create and maintain throughout the lunar cycles. It does not need to be large or elaborate: a clean surface, a white or silver candle, a crystal, an element from nature (a flower, a feather, a branch), and a written intention are enough. What matters is that this space is yours. Each month, you can renew it to reflect the energy of the current cycle.

7. Writing in a Full Moon Journal

A full moon journal is different from a daily journal. It follows the lunar rhythm rather than the solar one. Once a month, during the full moon, you sit down with your journal and answer a few guiding questions: What have I accomplished this cycle? What has weighed me down? What do I want to release? What do I want to cultivate? Over the months, patterns begin to emerge. You start to see your own evolution as a spiral rather than a straight line.

8. Channeling and Inner Listening

This is an aspect that few articles about full moon rituals address, yet it is one of the most powerful. The full moon, because of its energetic intensity, is a particularly favorable time for channeling: receiving messages from your spirit guides, your higher self, or the wisdom of your Akashic Records.

In my practice, the clearest channeling sessions often occur during full moons. If you are new to channeling, start simply: after your meditation, take a journal and allow your hand to write freely for ten minutes without censoring or rereading. You may be surprised by what emerges.

Full Moon Rituals and the Wheel of the Year: Adapting Your Practice to the Seasons

One of the things I love most about my practice is the way full moon rituals become richer when they are integrated into the broader framework of the Wheel of the Year. The Wheel of the Year is the calendar of the eight Celtic sabbats that mark the major seasonal transitions. And each full moon carries a different energy depending on the season in which it occurs.

The May full moon, traditionally called the Flower Moon, arrives only a few days before Beltane, the festival of fire and renewal. It is a full moon of blossoming, openness, and celebration of life unfolding. Rituals during this period benefit from incorporating fresh flowers, pink or orange candles, and intentions focused on fertility in its broadest sense: creativity, projects, and relationships.

By contrast, the October full moon arrives within the energy of Samhain, the time of the ancestors and the thinning veil between worlds. Rituals during this season are more inward, deeper, and more focused on listening to messages that come from afar.

In The Powers of the Earth, I explore in detail how the Earth itself guides us through these cycles. When we learn to read the season we are in, seasonal rituals naturally become more accurate, more powerful, and more aligned.

Full Moon and the Akashic Records: A Privileged Time for Receiving Guidance

This is something I have observed for years in my practice, yet very few resources on full moon rituals mention it: the full moon is one of the most favorable times to access the Akashic Records.

The Akashic Records are the complete memory of the soul, the space where every event, choice, and soul contract from all your lifetimes is recorded. During the full moon, when energy is at its peak and the veil between the conscious and unconscious mind becomes thinner, access to this deeper memory is facilitated. Messages come through more clearly. Realizations arrive more quickly.

In my Akashic readings, I regularly notice that people who book sessions around full moons arrive with more intense dreams, more frequent synchronicities, and heightened receptivity. It is as if the moon prepares the ground so that information can flow more freely.

If you feel that certain full moons bring you revelations, prophetic dreams, or unusually precise intuitions, it may be that your soul is taking advantage of this privileged window of access. And if these messages feel too intense or too mysterious to interpret on your own, an Akashic reading can help you place them in context and understand what they are trying to teach you.

Living in Harmony with Natural Cycles

Full moon rituals require neither special talent nor elaborate tools. They require only one thing: the willingness to slow down, once a month, and reconnect with something greater than everyday life.

The moon is a mirror. It reflects what is ripe, what is ready to leave, and what is seeking to emerge. By giving it a little of your time and attention, you begin to live in harmony with natural cycles rather than in resistance to them. And that one shift changes a great deal.

Start with just one ritual this month. Fire, moon bathing, journaling. Whichever one speaks to you most. Then observe what the moon has to tell you.

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions About Full Moon Rituals

What Should You Do During a Full Moon?

The full moon is an ideal time to practice rituals of release and reconnection. The most common practices include the fire release ritual (writing down what you want to let go of and burning the paper), moon bathing (consciously exposing yourself to moonlight), setting full moon intentions, full moon meditation, and charging crystals. It is not necessary to do everything. One sincere ritual is enough to honor the moment.

When Exactly Should You Perform Full Moon Rituals?

The lunar energy of the full moon is available within a 48-hour window around its peak: the day before, the day of, and the day after. It is not necessary to practice at the exact moment of the peak. What matters most is the quality of your presence and the intention you bring to the ritual. Consulting a lunar calendar will allow you to know the exact dates of each full moon.

Can You Perform Full Moon Rituals in an Apartment Without a Garden?

Yes, absolutely. Full moon rituals do not require access to the outdoors. Opening your windows to let in the moonlight, lighting candles, and creating an intentional space on a clean surface is enough. Sacred space is created through intention, not square footage. Many practitioners perform their rituals in apartments and experience equally profound results.

What Is the Difference Between a New Moon Ritual and a Full Moon Ritual?

The new moon is a time of beginnings. It is when we plant intentions and visualize what we want to create in the cycle ahead. The full moon is a time of culmination and release. It is when we celebrate what has grown, let go of what no longer serves us, and recharge our energy. These two phases complement one another and together form a complete 29-day lunar cycle.

What Is the Connection Between the Full Moon and the Akashic Records?

The full moon is one of the most favorable times to access the Akashic Records. Its intense energy thins the veil between ordinary consciousness and the deeper memory of the soul, facilitating the reception of messages, insights, and information about your life path. Sensitive individuals often notice more vivid dreams, more frequent synchronicities, and heightened intuition during full moons. An Akashic reading conducted around this period can be especially revealing.
